SA Spina Zonke glossary

Every term we use on this site, defined in plain English. Bookmark this page.

RTP
Return to Player. The percentage of total stakes a slot pays back over millions of spins. A 96% RTP slot returns R96 of every R100 staked, on average, over the long run. RTP is a long-run theoretical figure, not a session prediction. A single session can return zero or 10,000x. The certified RTP is set by the studio and identical at every operator that runs the title.
Volatility
Also called variance. How a slot's wins are distributed. Low volatility means lots of small wins, your balance bobs along. High volatility means long dry spells broken by occasional large wins, most of the RTP locked behind the bonus round. Medium sits between. Volatility does not change the RTP, just the shape of the journey.
Fixed-odds contingency
The legal frame that makes Spina Zonke style slots legal at SA-licensed bookmakers. Under the National Gambling Act 2004, online casino games are not lawful in SA. Slot-style games offered by provincial bookmakers are structured as fixed-odds bets on the outcome of an event (the spin), licensed under the provincial bookmaker licence. The Supreme Court of Appeal confirmed this distinction in Portapa / Supabets v CASA in October 2025.
FICA
Financial Intelligence Centre Act. SA's anti-money-laundering verification rules. Every SA-licensed bookmaker must FICA-verify a customer before paying any withdrawal: ID document, proof of address (utility bill or bank statement no older than three months), and bank account confirmation. First withdrawal at every operator will hold until FICA clears, typically 90 minutes to 24 hours.
Jackpot Race
A Hollywoodbets-exclusive promotion. Three race windows a week (Wednesday, Friday, Saturday 20:30 to 22:30 SAST) with a combined R900,000 prize pool, ~R3.6 million a month. Minimum R2 per spin on any Habanero title qualifies. The race is a leaderboard, not a pooled jackpot. Top finishers split fixed prizes, 195 winners on the R250,000 nights, 275 on Saturday's R400,000.
Multiplier cap
The maximum win a slot can pay on a single bet, expressed as a multiple of stake. Gates of Olympus caps at 5,000x stake. Gates of Olympus 1000 caps at 15,000x. The cap is built into the studio's maths file and is the same at every operator. Hitting the cap is statistically rare, on most slots it is a one-in-50-million event.
Provably fair
A cryptographic guarantee that the outcome of a crash game (Aviator, JetX, Spaceman) was determined before the round started and can be verified by the player after the round ends. Spribe, the studio behind Aviator, publishes a seed verifier on every operator. We do not recommend any crash game where the studio does not publish a verifier.
Wagering requirement
Also called a play-through. How many times a bonus (or bonus plus deposit) must be staked before the bonus money can be withdrawn. A 35x wagering requirement on a R200 bonus means R7,000 in total stakes before the bonus is withdrawable. Always check whether wagering is on bonus only or deposit plus bonus.
Free spins value
The stake the operator credits to each free spin. Hollywoodbets free spins are credited at R0.10 a spin. Lucky Fish at R0.50. A 50-spin promo at R0.10 is worth a maximum of R5 in stake value, not R50. Headline spin counts are deliberately misleading. Always read the spin value.
Max cashout from bonus
The cap on how much bonus-derived winnings can be withdrawn. Hollywoodbets caps the welcome at R1,200. Lucky Fish at R2,500. Anything won above the cap is forfeited at withdrawal. This is the single most-missed term in SA bonus T&Cs.
Provincial gambling board
The body that licenses SA bookmakers at provincial level. Nine boards: Mpumalanga, Western Cape, Eastern Cape, Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, North West, Northern Cape, Free State. Every operator on this site holds a current provincial licence. National oversight sits with the National Gambling Board (NGB).
Habanero
Manila-based slot studio. The original Spina Zonke lobby was built almost entirely on Habanero titles (Hot Hot Fruit, Mystic Fortune Deluxe, 5 Lucky Lions). The Jackpot Race runs on Habanero titles only. RTPs sit between 95.84% and 96.71% across the catalogue.
Pragmatic Play
The world's largest slot studio by lobby presence. Every SA operator runs the Pragmatic catalogue. Flagship titles include Gates of Olympus, Sweet Bonanza, Big Bass Bonanza, and Sugar Rush. Pragmatic RTPs are variable, meaning each operator can choose a tier (94%, 95.5%, or 96.5%). SA operators are split, check the slot review page for the specific operator RTP.
Bonus buy
A feature where the player pays a multiple of stake (usually 70x to 100x) to instantly trigger the slot's bonus round. Banned in some markets, legal in SA at the operator's discretion. Bonus buy RTPs are usually higher than base-game RTPs but the variance is brutal.
