How SA bookmaker cashiers work
SA bookmakers accept rand only. All deposits and withdrawals clear in ZAR. No crypto, no USD, no Naira, no Bitcoin from the operator itself (some sit on top of crypto rails through Stake's separate brand, but that is a different conversation, and a longer one).
Six rails carry roughly 95% of SA deposit traffic. Ozow, 1Voucher and OTT account for the bulk. Standard EFT covers the larger deposits and is the only rail that also handles withdrawals. SnapScan and Capitec Pay are the mobile-first newcomers, and they are catching up faster than the older rails would like.
Which rail to use
- Have a bank account, depositing under R50k: Ozow. Instant, free, universal.
- No bank account: 1Voucher or OTT Voucher, bought in cash at any major retailer.
- Depositing more than R50k: Standard EFT, no cap.
- Capitec client: Capitec Pay is faster than Ozow at Capitec because there is one less hop.
- Want to withdraw: Standard EFT. Every other rail is deposit-only.
FICA and withdrawals
You can deposit before FICA at most operators. You cannot withdraw before FICA at any of them. SA bookmakers must hold the first withdrawal until they have your SA ID (both sides), proof of address within three months, and a bank account confirmation that matches the FICA name. Hollywoodbets clears FICA fastest at around 90 minutes during business hours. Others take up to 48 hours. This is the law. Plan ahead, especially if your first withdrawal request goes in at 22:00 on a Friday.
